Sloughi Appearance

The Sloughi is a medium size Squarish and leggy dog, with gentle and melancholy expression. He has been described as a smooth coated version of the Saluki. This is a breed that had never achieved great popularity. Their strong body is slightly higher than long. The Sloughi has a smooth, floating and effortless gait. The top-line descends along the neck and straightens along the back. The Sloughi's eyes are ideally dark brown, though sometimes amber. The ears are short and drooping. The tail is long and held low, ending with a typical upward curve.

The Sloughi's has a soft, short haired coat with no extensive white markings. The most common colors are shades of pale sand with a black mask. The weight of the Sloughi is around 45-60 pounds and the height is around 24-28 inches.

Sloughi Temperament

The Sloughi is a hunter at sight and a great companion. They are proud, temperamental and somewhat obstinate with considerable stamina. The Sloughi is faithful to his owner and it needs him close by. They are easy to train. Early socialization is very important. A well socialized Sloughi is loving, gentle, playful, delicate and very loyal to its owner. The Sloughi is alert and cautious with strangers.

Is Sloughi the Right Dog Breed for You?

Daily exercise and being an integrated part of the family are prerequisites for a well adjusted Sloughi. They need a daily walk on leash, a game or a daily run in the yard. Once they have had their exercise, a Sloughi will be perfectly happy to relax on the most comfortable spot in the house. They get along well with children and other animals if they are raised with them. But caution is recommended when the dog is outside with smaller animals since this breed has strong chase instinct.

Sloughi Health problems

The Sloughi is a relatively healthy breed. There are not major concerns associated with this breed. They can be prone to PRA (Progressive retinal atrophy). Like all sighthounds, the Sloughi is very sensitive to anesthesia, and can be sensitive to vaccines and other medications.

Sloughi Care and Grooming

The Sloughi coat requires a little grooming. You can brush them occasionally to keep looking great. Brush with a firm bristle brush, and dry shampoo occasionally. Bathe in mild soap only when necessary. Although the breed develops a denser coat in winter, it should not be left outside for long periods of time in cold weather it was originally breed as a desert hound, and needs protection in cold and wet weather.
