English Toy Spaniel Appearance

The English toy spaniel is a small dog, with a soft appealing expression. They have similar characteristics as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The English toy spaniel is square proportioned, compact and stocky with a broad jaw and domed head. The muzzle is very short. His eyes are large and his nose is short and pushed back with wide nostrils. The ears are very long, hanging close to the head with heavy feathering. The tail is either a natural screw, or docked.

The English toy spaniel is profusely coated with a silky flowing coat that can be straight or slightly wavy. The colors can be solid red, black and tan or either these colors on a white background. The weight of the English toy spaniel is around 8-14 pounds and the height is around 10 inches.

English Toy Spaniel Temperament

The English toy spaniel is a gentle, happy and playful loving breed that is naturally well-behaved and intelligent. He enjoys rollicking romps and it is a typical lapdog, gently, amiable, calm and quiet. They are very affectionate, devoted and willing to please its handler. They are good family companions and play well with children and friendly with other dogs but reserved with strangers. Some are known to be picky eaters.

Is English Toy Spaniel the Right Dog Breed for You?

Their small size makes the English toy spaniel ideal for an apartment. They are relatively inactive indoors, and will do okay without a yard as long as they are sufficiently exercised. Although it will enjoy a nice walk on leash or a fun game, they are not overly active and his exercise needs could be met with minimal effort. The English toy spaniel does not do well in warm climates and is not recommended for outside living under any circumstances. He needs to be inside with its family.

The English toy spaniel is a relatively healthy breed. The major concerns associated with them are patellar luxation, early tooth loss, lazy tonge (protudes from mouth) and cardiac problems like PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosis) or MVD (Progressive Mitral Valve Disease. Like many other short-faced breeds, the English toy spaniel may wheeze and snore and have trouble breathing. 

English Toy Spaniel Care and Grooming

The English toy spaniel is relatively easy to groom. Brush them one or twice a week with a firm bristle brush, and dry shampoo occasionally. Bathe in mild soap only when necessary. Over bathing or frequent bathing you will strip the oils from the coat and may cause severe skin irritations and possible allergy type reactions. Their eyes and ears should be check at least ones a week to avoid infections.

The English toy spaniel is an average shedder; you'll find hair stuck to your couch, carpets, clothes and everything else in your home, therefore is not best suited for those with allergies.
