Kuvasz Appearance

The Kuvasz is a large dog, with a keen expression. These breed is amount the oldest of all breads. The head is considered to be the most beautiful part of the breed and it should be half as wide as it is long. The Kuvasz is sturdily built and well muscled, without the slightest hint of bulkiness or laziness. The body is medium boned, slightly longer than it is tall. Their eyes are almond shape and set well apart. Eye color is dark brown. The ears are V shape with the tips slightly rounded. The tail is carried low and got slightly raised when is happy.

The Kuvasz has a thick weather resistant coat. They have a soft undercoat and a longer outer coat which can range from almost straight to wavy but not curly. The color is always white with no markings. The weight of the Kuvasz is around 70-115 pounds and the height is around 26-30 inches.

Kuvasz Temperament

The Kuvasz is very sensitive, devoted, and gentle. They are also smart, spirited dog and patient without been overly demonstrative. They are by nature guarding dog, and are ready to protect their homes and loves one even to the point of sacrifice themselves if necessary. They are good with children but polite and rather suspicious with strangers. Early socialization and training is necessary if you are planning to have the dog as a family pet or around other animals.

Is Kuvasz the Right Dog Breed for Me?

Kuvaszs are guarding dog, originally used for protecting livestock such as horses, sheep and cattle. They are active dogs that need a mental and physical activity and are not recommended for an apartment living. They need least an hour of strenuous exercise every day to keep them in shape. The Kuvasz have a mind of his own and may take the initiative to react to a perceived threat to its charges at any time.

Kuvasz Health problems

The Kuvasz is a relatively healthy breed. The major concerns associated with them are PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) and some bone problems like hip dysplasia.

Kuvasz Care & Grooming

The Kuvasz stiff, dense coat does not require any special grooming. He needs to be brush one or twice a week but more frequently during heavy seasonal shedding. Use dry shampoo occasionally and bathe in mild soap only when necessary. Over bathing or frequent bathing your dog will strip the oils from the coat and may cause severe skin irritations and possible allergy type reactions. Their ears should be check at least ones a week to avoid infections. Some clipping and trimming are advice every month or two for optimal look.

Kuvasz Shedding

The Kuvasz sheds seasonally in cold climates, but in warmer climates, it will most likely shed all year around, therefore may not be well suited for those with allergies.
