Australian Terrier Appearance

The Australian Terrier is a smart little dog, with a keen expression. Physically the Australian Terrier tends to be a bit shorter than long with a thick solid body and an especially thick collar of fur around the neck. His head is long and strong. His ears are small, erect and V-shaped. His eyes are dark brown and his tail is set high and traditionally docked. His feet are small, and catlike.

The Australian Terrier has a medium length shaggy harsh double coat that is not normally trimmed. The most common colors are blue and tan, solid sandy and solid red. The weight of the Australian Terrier is around 12-14 pounds and the height is around 10-11 inches.

The Australian Terrier is brave, vigilant and alert. He is fun loving, playful, independent and adapt well to all circumstances. The Australian Terrier was also bred for companionship, they tend to be very friendly, and enjoy interacting with people. They get along well with other dogs and household pets. However they may chase small animals outside the house and should be in a safe area at all times. It is reserved with strangers and little stubborn sometimes. Early socialization and obedience training is important.

The Australian Terrier is an active dog that needs lots exercise. They are good for apartment living they are fairly active indoors and will do okay without a yard. He is able to live outdoor in temperate to warm climate but is best when is allow to spend some time inside with its family. He likes to bark a lot and can be very useful as watchdog. Like all other terriers, the Aussie loves to dig.

The Australian Terrier is a relatively healthy breed. There are not major concerns associated with them, although they can be prone to patellar luxation, seizures, Legg Perthes and skin allergies. As with all breeds the Australian Terrier will need regular vaccinations, worming, flea and tick treatment to keep him healthy

Australian Terrier Care & Grooming

The Australian Terrier doesn’t require too much grooming. You can simply brush his coat occasionally to keep it smooth and in good condition. Brush with a firm bristle brush, and dry shampoo occasionally. Bathe in mild soap only when necessary. Over bathing or frequent bathing your dog will strip the oils from the coat and may cause severe skin irritations and possible allergy type reactions. Clean and check their ears regularly to avoid infections.
