The American Water Spaniel is a rare breed, with a self-confident expression. They are natural lovers of water, skilled retrievers and multitalented hunters. The American Water Spaniel is slightly longer than tall, solidly built and muscular. The eyes are slightly rounded, wide set and vary in color from light yellow-brown to brown hazel to dark brown, depending on the coat color. The ears are long, wide and well covered with hair. The tail is curved in a rocket fashion and the legs are medium in length.

The American Water Spaniel has a curly to marcell (uniformly wavy) coat that is dense and well-suited to protect him against cold water and inclement weather conditions. They could also be prone to cancer, hip dysplasia, diabetes, allergies, hypothyroidism, epilepsy, cataracts, pulmonic stenosis, CHD (Coronary Heart disease) and patellar luxation. As with all breeds the American Water Spaniel will need regular vaccinations, worming, flea and tick treatment to keep him healthy.

The American Water Spaniel oily coat requires a weekly brushing to keep it in good condition. Brush with a firm bristle brush, and dry shampoo occasionally. The American Water Spanish oily coat may occasionally be somewhat "doggy" smelling. Bathe in mild soap only when necessary. Over bathing or frequent bathing your dog will strip the oils from the coat and may cause severe skin irritations and possible allergy type reactions. The ears should be checked regularly to avoid infections.
